Courland is a historical region of the province of Latvia in the Russian Empire. Peter I of Russia had installed a duchy answerable to Russia in the region, led by his brother's daughter, Anna. When she became Empress, Courland recieved an increased degree of indpendence. In the 1770's, Catherine II, worried Courland would secede, annexed the region and made it part of the current Latvia.
