Jaysburgh is a city located in Payerd County, Carlana, and the county seat of that county. The city is known for being the birthplace of former Carlana West mayor Sid Gathran, who served from 2009 to 2014.

Jaysburgh is located near the epicenter of a magnitude-3.3 earthquake that occurred in October 1991.

History[]

Jaysburgh was founded during the 1830s, and was one of the first communities incorporated after Carlana's statehood in 1835. It received its current name in 1839, when a resident suggested naming the community after Battle of Authonome soldier Edward F. Jay, who, after dying in 1852 at age 61, was buried there. Before 1839, it was known as North Hill.

Jaysburgh is known for its long history of inclement weather. The city experienced many severe thunderstorms between 1882 and 1892. Tornadoes occurred in or near the city in 1902, 1908, 1912, 1914, 1916, 1921, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1934, 1940, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1957, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2015. High winds caused damage in the city in March 2012. This long history has earned the city the nickname "Bad Weather City" among locals.

Jaysburgh is served by the Jaysburgh City Schools system, and the city is also home to a community college.

Transportation[]

The main highway in Jaysburgh is National Highway 72, which provides a link to Liberty and Aikenville. Highway 72 is a four-lane divided highway within the city limits. The city is the north end of State Highway 79 and the east end of State Highways 14 and 114.
