Mean Hook town limit

The town limit sign on Highway 735

Mean Hook is a small town located in Jones County, Lohana. At the 2010 census, the town only had a population of about 628 people. Mean Hook is listed on a list of unusual place names.

Mean Hook has become known for the notorious "Mean Hook Nightmare", a steep grade on State Route 735 north of its junction with State Route 344. This grade is dreaded by motorists, many of whom, if they need to travel to the city of Macrau, turn off on Thatcher Road (Old Route 344), take it over to Route 741, and take Route 741 to Macrau, just to avoid the grade.[1]
